With the election season behind us, we are moving into the season of gratitude and thanksgiving. This Sunday I am preaching on one of the Biblical texts which in my past I have consistently underestimated: the story of the wise and foolish virgins in Matthew 25:1-13. This text holds together the paradox of the work of waiting.
Faithful waiting is not simply about keeping our lamps lit until God arrives. It is about living in ways that reflect God's justice and righteousness while we wait. It is all about living our whole lives, prepared for God's justice to break through at any time, as the prophet Amos says:
"...let justice roll down like water and righteousness like an everflowing stream."
The Rev Dr Martin Luther King, Jr evoked this phrase often to describe the coming justice of the Civil Rights Movement in our country, and how God will be faithful, even while we are living short of justice.
Yes, we live short of justice, but there is so much still ahead in the story of God and God's people. I'll say more when we are together on Sunday. Join us!
